Science Fiction Geek from the Beginning

By Alex J. Cavanaugh

It stands to reason that a science fiction writer would grow up loving the genre. My name is Alex, and I have been a certified Science Fiction Geek my entire life!

Of course, all ‘geeks’ around my age grew up devouring Star Trek, Lost in Space, The Twilight Zone, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers (I was in love with Erin Gray), The Six Million Dollar Man, and every other show that had the slight aroma of the fantastic. I spent a good deal of my formative years sitting in a darkened theater soaking up Star Wars, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Close Encounters and others. These films took me to places that had my imagination soaring.

Even the bad science fiction films had me at hello. Do you remember Ice Pirates, MetalStorm: The Destruction of Jared Syn, Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone, and Krull? I do. I even recall one special Christmas Eve when my parents dropped my brother and I off at the theater to watch what we all thought was just an animated kid’s movie. Wrong! The movie was Fantastic Planet and the experience akin to a fever dream. Fortunately, I was too young to understand the story, but the weird images stayed with me.

My interest in science fiction continued through my reading material. A big fan of DC comics, I devoured all things JLA, Teen Titans, and The Legion of Superheroes. I also discovered Monster Magazine and was fascinated by Godzilla and other creature features. I know I’m showing my age here, but remember Dynamite magazine? They featured books for kids to order, and I still have my copy of a Buck Rogers seminal novel, now dog-eared and worn.

My imagination was sparked in my youth and I began creating my own space adventures. I wrote about new worlds, strange races, and heroes who would save the universe. I took inspiration from any source, and my interest spilled over into fantasy and D&D. Most of those stories and quests were lost over time—lucky for all of you.

One story survived, though. And almost thirty years later, I completely rewrote it as a tale of war, adventure, and friendship. Only the main two characters and the title survived. That story became my first published book, CassaStar. Next March, the sequel, CassaFire, will be released.

My point is that even children with the weirdest dreams and fantasies can find an outlet for their creativity. It has certainly found its place in my life. Sometimes, it’s good to be the science fiction geek!

From one science fiction geek to another, you rock! You've brought back such fond memories for me, though I don't think I will ever be re-writing my first sci-fi story - about a man who travelled the galaxy sucking up space debris with a giant hoover!

Good to know about the history of Alex. I had a crush on Erin Gray myself as a youngster.

Ellie, why not? Be like a Hitchhiker book.

Jeremy, I've seen pictures - she's still hot.

Rusty, what boy didn't?

I owe my love of sci fi to my dad. He took us to see every Star Trek, Star Wars, and superhero movie as soon as they were released. My all-time favorite is The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. I have it on DVD. My kids don't get it.

Tonja! "Laugh-a while-a you can, Monkey Boy!"

Alex, I came to science fiction late in life--high school. A friend recommended Heinlein's HAVE SPACE SUIT, WILL TRAVEL, and my world has never been the same. :)

I love that Science Fiction has been an influence with you since your childhood. I'm so glad you have a Sequel. The characters in CassaStar are fantastic and so was the storyline! I'm looking forward to reading CassaFire. Thanks for sharing how you became interested in Science Fiction :) (I'm showing my age too, because I recognized a good many of those shows and movies :)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Kitty, you are a hoot!

Tonja, I bet they don't.

Marian, Heinlein was a big influence.

Aleta, thanks, and we are not old yet. I refuse!

I am thinking with enough time those other stories will come back! I loved hearing about how your interest in sci fi was fed and how it blossomed too!

Eric said...

Okay, that you remember Ice Pirates and Dynamite is hilarious to me. Both are from way back and are obscure enough to be cult classics. Great post though, Alex.

Katy said...

I agree with Bossy Betty...I love hearing how other's interests began. Great story! Thanks. PS: Sci Fi movie on Christmas Eve sounds like a great tradition!

OK, I loved all of those TV shows and movies in my youth too, Alex. I never considered myself a science fiction geek, but . . . Hmmm. Anyway, thanks for sharing the story of the genesis of your passion. We wish you continued success with CassaStar and with the launch of CassaFire.

Thank you Alex for writing "even children with the weirdest dreams and fantasies can find an outlet for their creativity. It has certainly found its place in my life. Sometimes, it’s good to be the science fiction geek!"
Your parents let you be you. Allowing children to naturally gravitate to their interests is how children become all they deserve to be. Great story! Thank you for sharing.

Alex, thank you for this post! I love hearing stories about how people came to be the accomplished people they are today! Great post!

I grew up watching all the films you mention in your post. My favorites were Lost in Space, The Twilight Zone, Star Wars, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and I love Close Encounters. Science fiction is a genre for kids of all ages that has sparked imaginations and inspired many to read. Thanks for the great post.

I always enjoy hearing about the genesis of someone's passion. Creativity and imagination amongst children is a terrific way to start the process.

What fun, Alex! I remember enjoying Dr. Who with my son, and this mean space ogre always saying "Ex-ter-min-ate!"

Dani said...

Alex! I just downloaded CassaStar to my Nook! It's been on my list of books to read since the release, and now I have to catch up before the next book comes out. So did you ever read Andre Norton's books? Hubbs is a huge fan of hers - he has paperbacks he's re-read a gazillion times.

Here's to being a sci fi geek. I have my jacket, but no stinkin' badge as I don't need one. I used to love the robot from Lost in Space. Crush! Kill! Destroy! I think that's what he said.

Angie said...

Hooray for sci-fi geeks! I didn't actually start reading a lot of sci-fi until college and didn't discover Star Trek until then, either. But despite my late start, I'm still a geek through and through.

Helen Ginger said...

My name is Helen and I am a sci-fi geek. Okay, not quite up to your geek status, but I watched Battlestar Gallactica, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. I remember standing in line to see the firs airing of the first Star Wars movie.

Land Wilson said...

We must be close in age. I remember everything you mention. My best friend and I were into all of this stuff. I was at a few Star Trek conventions and I loved the movie Blade Runner. I even took a class in high school from James Doohan (Scotty Montgomery). My friend and I still have our Iron Man and X-Men collections inside their plastic protective covers. Thanks for this blast to the past.

Arlee Bird said...

Enjoyed hearing your story. I too was into the same genre but my upbringing was more in the films of the 50s and 60s. I loved anything to do with radioactive mutations or nuclear destruction. Geeks unite!

Eric, I'm from way back!

Melanie, they did let me pursue my own interests. Also helped I had an older brother who got all the pressure!

Rose, those were some of my favorites as well.

Dani, thank you!!! I hope you enjoy it.

Angie, that makes you uber-cool.

Helen, so did I! It was a crazy long line.

Land, that class must've been awesome.

Lee, you just got a head start, that's all!

Thank you everyone!

It's always good to be a science fiction geek. haha. Though Ice Pirates... that movie is so painful to watch. But yeah... I loved it too.

Dani said...

Does anyone else read Anne McCaffrey or is that not sci-fi-ish enough? Some of her writing is more fantasy, but I was just thinking about The Ship Who Sang series, with living people embodied in actual space ships. I was always fascinated by the idea of a human consciousness operating within a flying machine. What if you didn't like your pilot?

Jasmine Saldate said...

Gotta love science fiction or anything fantasy world for that matter! I think we all have a bit of "science geek" in us. Who doesn't like a time travel movie or an alternate universe. I think these ideas allow us to think of ourselves with infinite possibility...

Love learning new things about my bloggy friends. I grew up watching all those things, too, but from a very different perspective.

Who wasn't in love with Erin Gray?! My inner SciFi geek was born with 2001 Space Odyssey and Star Wars. I remember standing in a VERY long line to watch the first Star Wars movie. The anticipation was such that no one complained about the hours long wait to see the movie. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Alex! Great blog! ~~Keith A.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

TS, we were young and didn't know any better...

Jasmine, yes they do!

Thanks, Keith!

I wonder if kids are born predisposed to liking sci-fi. It's like cilantro for me, I've always wanted to like it but haven't been able to really embrace it. I was one of those kids who was afraid of the dark so sci-fi light was about all I could handle; Lost In Space, Battlestar Galactica, and Star Wars I loved, but my threshold started taking hold at Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, and The Twilight Zone TOTALLY freaked me out(!), creeeepy.
I do, however, love that the sci-fi world exists. Its creators push people's minds into fantastical realms that go beyond the ordinary. It's creative and inspirational, and I don't think there is anything geeky about that!!!

It would be impossible for me to imagine Alex as anything but a Sci-Fi gee- fan. My son is into sci-fi stuff and has an opening in his summer reading list, so guess what I just ordered...

M Pax said...

Ah, yes, my geeky side loves soaking up sci-fi stories and creating my own, too. Looking forward to the new book, Alex.

I watched Buck Rogers for Gil Gerard!
Dani, Anne McCaffrey is my favorite author. Most of her books are sci-fi, including the Dragonriders of Pern series.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Lesliei, not sure. I also like horror, so the dark stuff doesn't bother me.

Nicki, you are awesome - thank you!!

Thanks everyone!

Alex, great guest post. Sure brought back the memories with Lost In Space and Twilight Zone. Back then as a kid anything that freaked me and my friend out was great stuff. I was so hooked on Star Trek I was devestated when it went of the air. Geek on, dude!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Ali, I'm sure you are raising some awesome geek children!

TF - only normal people.

Chuck, I know! No more Enterprise, Voyager - nothing.

Too cool, Captain Alex. I remember Krull and Spacehunter very well. I was a huge fan of Wonder Woman, Buck Rogers, Battlestar Galactica and I used to watch Superfriends and the Hall of Justice.

I draw my own inspiration from these childhood faves and long to own them on DVD.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Happy for you!
