I’m fortunate to live in a culturally rich and diverse state that annually celebrates Cinco De Mayo, a Mexican holiday held on May 5th. I can remember as a young woman working at a bridal store, and dressing the mannequins in long, white gowns gracing window displays for just this celebration. In later years, I attended many a party to which we all brought our favorite Mexican foods and drinks. It was a time to share music, dance, and laughter across cultures. The civic holiday actually celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily observed in the state of Puebla in Mexico, and not throughout the country itself. In the United States, it is more broadly celebrated in honor of Mexican heritage and pride. It was first celebrated in California during the American Civil War era.
Many schools in America teach Spanish, and we have a blossoming Hispanic population that continues to grow from year to year. With the cross-cultural team at Little Pickle Press, it's not surprising that we have a focus on global cultures of all kinds. Some of our book titles reflect this. Please allow us the opportunity to tell you about the Little Pickle Press title, What Does It Mean To Be Global? available in Spanish. You might consider sharing copies with Mexican and Latino friends or with a teacher of Spanish language. Or to learn a little Spanish yourself! Here’s a nice review from the Cultured Seed, a wonderful website about growing globally-minded children through cultural enrichment. They are new friends from the LA Times Festival of Books last weekend and we are delighted to have a spot on their virtual center stage.
During the month of May, we also have a special promotion for free shipping with your orders so be sure to use coupon code LPPPLAY. You know how those shipping costs can add up so be sure to play along!
We wish everyone a safe and fun Cinco de Mayo. Do you plan to celebrate? If so, how? Do you use the opportunity to share a cultural lesson with your pepinillos poco?

I can't wait to have a margarita! This is a wonderfully global holiday! And What Does It Mean To Be Global? is a great book(in any of the 3 languages) to enhance a child's world view. Olé!
I would be celebrating if I didn't have finals! I might follow Leslie's lead and have a margarita! One of my favorite Cinco de Mayo celebrations is held at Bazaar Del Mundo in San Diego, with beautiful singing and dancing. If anybody is in that area I would recommend going!
Thank you for this history lesson, Dani. I didn't know some of the history behind what we view as another reason to have a margarita!!!
We will be heading out shortly to The Cantina to enjoy Mexican fare tonight. My son apparently LOVED the piñata activity at nursery school today.
