If you were a song, which one would you be?

By Rana DiOrio, Founder, Little Pickle Press

The people closest to me know that when I am happy, I listen to music, and I sing. Music makes my spirit soar—it always has, and I hope that it always will. As I drove my daughter to her older sister’s birthday party on Saturday, I turned on the radio and started to flip stations. Truth be told, when I am driving by myself, I listen to KDFC, our local classical music station (which streams live at http://www.kdfc.com/). But Alex doesn’t always like to listen to classical music, so I honored her request to find something else on the radio. We landed on Alice@97.3, the local pop station.

Two songs into our journey, one of my favorite feel-good songs aired—Natasha Bedingfield’s Unwritten. Alex and I sang and bobbed as we headed to the festivities at In The Kitchen (which BTW is a terrific place in the San Francisco Bay Area to host an event for children or adults). Then, it occurred to me, if I were a song, I’d be this one. Here are the lyrics:

I am unwritten, can't read my mind, I'm undefined
I'm just beginning, the pen's in my hand, ending unplanned

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Oh, oh, oh

I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines
We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten

Oh, yeah, yeah

Upbeat, positive, unconventional, open-minded, comfortable with change, still learning and growing, better at communicating through the written word than the spoken one, living life to the fullest, one day to the next—this, in a song, represents me at this point in my life. So, my question for you is: if you were a song, which one would you be? And why? Please share your thoughts with us.

Ironically, I am wordless. ;) Zipoli's Adagio for Oboe, Cello, and Strings resonates at my core like no other. Here's a version though not my favorite arrangement. http://bit.ly/e7liQz

That is one tough question that I will need to ponder. There are so many genres that I love, it's hard to pick from the lot. After reading Dani's post, Toccata in Fugue d minor by Bach is one of my all-time favorites, but like Dani's, it is wordless.

Pondering....

Great question Rana! I've always loved this one: Beautiful by Carol King: You've got to get up every morning with a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes, you will
That you're beautiful as you feel

This is a really tough question! There are many songs that inspire me and motivate me but which one of them would I actually be? It would have to be Jay-Z's My First Song. It's a bit graphic, as it is a rap song but the sentiment of overcoming obstacles and staying true is what resonates with me. The way he describes singing his song is how I feel about writing my stories. This is my favorite verse and its pg.

It's my life - my pain and my struggle
The song that I sing to you it's my every-thing
Treat my first like my last, and my last like my first
And my thirst is the same as - when I came
It's my joy and my tears and my laughter it brings to me
It's my ev-ery-thing
Treat my first like my last, and my last like my first
And my thirst like the first song I sang

I heard Carole sing Beautiful in concert this past summer. I cried and cried. It's an amazing song created by a recording genius. Thanks for sharing.

I started thinking about this early this morning and I still don't have an answer. Of course anything Motown is a favorite, and I do enjoy all sorts of classical, rock and some country...but to choose one song, if I could be one...I just don't have any idea!?! I will keep thinking...or singing!

I'd like to know what Jasmine, the resident songbird at Little Pickle Press has to say!

If I were a song I'd have to be "If I Were A Bell" by Amel Larrieux!

.....Ask me how do I feel,
Little me with my quiet upbringing
Well sir, all I can say is if I were a gate I'd be swinging
And if I were a watch I'd start popping my springs
Well, and if I were a bell I'd go ding dong, ding dong ding......

Jolly and happy!!!!! :-D

Being a person that loves all types of music, picking just one song is a task!!! I associate music to an emotion more than being representative of who I am...so my song may change next month or even next week! LOL!!!
