Beginner's Mind Tip-of-the-Day

By Elizabeth Topp PhD, Co-Founder of ShiftAlliance

Our "original mind" includes everything within itself.
It is always rich and sufficient within itself.

You should not lose your self-sufficient state of mind.

This does not mean a closed mind, but actually an empty mind and a ready mind.
If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything; it is open to everything.

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities;
in the expert's mind there are few.

~ Shunryu Suzuki,
Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind

Pick one situation or issue you find challenging. How might your perspective shift if you were to approach things from the perspective of beginner's mind?

Thank you for sharing. I have a tendency to cling to things that aren't working. One of my New Year's Resolution is to let go to create space for things that will work. This is a great way to achieve that.

Let go of pre-conceived notions and approach challenges and obstacles with a beginner's mind. As an entrepreneur, I try to do this daily. What I need to do is apply this to interpersonal relationships. There is always the opportunity to learn and grow!

This perspective is really interesting... especially helpful with parenting. What can I learn today from my children, open my mind... rather than what I can show or teach them. Thanks for the sharing this idea.

Some days, just trying to empty the mind of all the relentless details is a challenge!

If you can't remember those young years when everything was new and unknown, watch your own kids or grandkids.

Instead of freaking out because I forget things, I'll now enjoy the blank space-I'll consider it an empty canvas!
